Young Women Rising Film Series
As part of your child's exploration of global social, economic and environmental issues, the following films will be shown (in part or entirety):
- Stealing the Light (disturbing story of education inequalities in Afghanistan)
- The Beauty Academy of Kabul (about American women returning to Afghanistan to open a beauty school)
- What are We Doing Here? (A critical look at global charity efforts in Africa)
- Manufactured Landscapes (by Edward Burtynsky! A creation of stunningly beautiful art from civilization's materials and debris. Mostly shot in China as a pictorial of that country's industrial revolution)
- The 11th Hour (narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio - an environmental film about global ecological consciousness)
- Syriana (Based in part on the writings of former CIA case officer Robert Baer, the film combines multiple storylines to explore the complexities that befall a proposed merger between two U.S. oil giants)
- Soylent Green (1973 American science fiction film direted by Richard Fleischer and starring Charlton Heston. The film depicts the investigation into the murder of a wealthy businessman in a dystopian future
