Weekly Topic Overview: This week we begin our examination of specific case studies of childhood trauma across cultures. We start with the topic of child abuse/neglect in the United States. The aim is to determine the prevalence of child abuse/neglect (or maltreatment) among the U.S. population and to examine the various forms that child maltreatment takes. Lastly, we will examine some of the short- and long-term effects child abuse has on individuals both in childhood and adulthood.

2. Analyze some of the short- and long-term effects of child maltreatment for individuals in childhood and adulthood.

Weekly Topic Overview: This week we continue our examination of specific case studies of childhood trauma across cultures by focusing on the experiences of children and youth living in Palestine and Israel. The aim this week is to understand what has been happening in Palestine and Israel over the past 70+ years and to gain some sense of how growing up amidst ongoing war and violence has affected the psychological wel-lbeing of Palestinian and Israeli children and youth. We also explore how vulnerability and resilience factor into these children and young people’s experiences with trauma both in the short- and long-term.

1. Examine the experiences of Palestinian and Israeli children and youth who have grown up in the context of ongoing war and violence.

2. Explore how aspects of culture and social contexts may influence child vulnerability and resiliency in Palestine and Israel.
3. Analyze some of the short- and long-term effects of war-related trauma on the lives of Palestinian and Israeli peoples both in childhood and adulthood.
